Dynamic Converging

This piece is 9 x 12 on a triple primed canvas sheet - professional Chroma Interactive acrylics minimal brush work - most of the painting was done with a palette knife in a loose painterly style with lots of spontaneity and gusto.

The lower sections of two mesas are converging to form a canyon.

As always I throw in my sky first and then start to develop the land mass

The Remnants Of Patrica

As Hurricane Patrica began its exit from Mexico and began its assent through Texas and eventually the eastern seaboard, the west coast of Florida felt some of effects of Patrica.  Although a good distance from our shores, the wind and mostly the clouds and rain was felt for 2 days on the Gulf of Mexico.

9 x 12 on triple primed acid free canvas - loose painterly style using Professional Chroma Interactive acrylics - medium size brush and some palette knife work.  Done with gusto - and spontaneity of color and strokes.

When the water gets churning in the Gulf of Mexico lots of erosion can take place as the shore line is quite exposed in many areas.

Distant Shore Line

This is 11 x 14 and was done as a study for a larger piece - perhaps 18 x 24.  I used a big brush for this and and the main exercise was to depict some movement in the ocean with waves coning in on the rocks in the foreground.

As always I used Chroma Interactive professional acrylic paint.  I used heavy linen paper for this piece as well as a large brush.

Palette Knife Pleasure - The Southwest Desert

Just got back from a couple of days at Harry Potter World so my mind is in sort of a "wild & crazy" place - which means "IT'S PALETTE KNIFE TIME"!!!!!!

This is 9 x 12 on an acid free triple primed canvas sheet - Professional Chroma Interactive acrylic paint and my buddy "MACK THE KNIFE"!!!!  This was done alla prima - wet into wet with spontaneity in form and color using a wide sweeping arm for application.

Sometimes Ya just got to be "Wild & Crazy" and have some fun when painting - can't be serious all the time!!!  This is a semi abstract piece with lots of gusto - spontaneity both in color and in shape!!

Canyonland National Park - Utah - Island In The Sky

9 x 12 on acid free canvas sheet - professional acrylic paint - done in a painterly style with a touch of impressionism  with spontaneity and gusto.  This is a beautiful area of the USA - many wonderful sites and the colors are just outstanding throughout the Canyon area.  If you go there - "squint" so you can see all the colors - reflected color is amazing.

Red Rock Canyon - Shadows & Reflections

Boynton Canyon in Sedona Arizona is a beautiful spot for hiking and for painting.

12 x 9 - single canvas sheet - Chroma Interactive acrylics - alla prima - wet into wet - some brush work but mostly palette knife.

This canyon is adjacent to the Enchantment Resort which is also very beautiful and has a wonderful restaurant. The hiking trails wrap around the resort's grounds and they go up somewhat in elevation giving a great view.

New Mexico Speaks Up

New Mexico has some great Red Rock country - giving both Arizona & Utah a run for the money!

14 x 11 - heavy linen paper - Chroma Interactive acrylics - brush and palette knife - wet into wet - alla prima with spontaneity and gusto.  With watery paint I sketch in shapes of what the scene might look like - I make alterations as I go along - changing those areas I feel necessary.

I then start building the BG and the mid ground cliffs and move on to the FG grasses and desert

Storm Forming Out In The Gulf

During the hot muggy months ( June thru Oct ) most every afternoon rains storms roll in from the Gulf Of Mexico - sometimes they last 10 minutes and other times an hour or more & they can drop upwards to 2 inches per hour - a very wet semi-tropical atmosphere in this area.

Went to the beach the other morning and around noon time one of these rain events started rolling in from the Gulf - took some photos and we left for home.

16 x 20 on heavy linen paper - Chroma Interactive acrylics - large brushes - spontaneity and gusto - with perhaps some slight exaggeration for drama :>)

Rocky Coastline Acadia NP Maine

Acadia is a beautiful National park located in the Bar Harbor area of Maine - we spent some time there during our year of travelling the USA & Canada in our 31 foot self contained RV.  Truly majestic!!!

This painting is 16 x 20 on heavy linen acid free paper - painted with Chroma Interactive Professional acrylic paints.  This is a painterly style but certainly not as loosely done as most of my work of late. For some reason I had an urge to include more detail into this painting - I assume because my memory if it was that of very visible beauty.

I throw in the sky - a distant land mass and the ocean along with the start of the "rocky coastline".

I build on the rocks giving them dimension - a shadow side and a sun side

I continue to build the coastline rock giving them texture and making them look HARD!!

I add in some waves and ocean overflow and splashing onto the rocks

DETAIL OF ROCKS
